Our Story

Get to Know Us
Tragically in 2019 - 2020, South Australia lost approximately 14,000 bats from the Adelaide colony and over 400 bats in care due to an extreme Heat Stress event. This event clearly showed that there was an urgent need for more bat rescuers and carers than were available at the time, especially with South Australia’s growing bat population and looming hotter summers due to climate change.
In response, Bat Rescue South Australia Inc. was officially founded in 2020. Our founder, Sue, who has over 30 years’ experience working with microbats and 13 years working with Adelaide’s flying foxes, saw this need and acted upon it by seeking out expertise and best practice in rehabilitation practices from carers interstate that constantly deal with large scale emergencies. This enabled a group of dedicated volunteers with the most up to date knowledge in bat rescue and rehabilitation to come together for the welfare of the vulnerable Grey Headed Flying Foxes and South Australia’s thriving microbat populations.
